Teichoic acids are bacterial polysaccharides of glycerol phosphate or ribitol phosphate linked via phosphodiester bonds.

Lysis of Gram-positive bacteria and release of the teichoic acid into the bloodstream may cause fever, blood vessel dilation and possibly shock and subsequent death.
